Arachnophobia

I am not exactly sure when it started, but I have fear of spiders. I think that having a fear of spiders is healthy. (They can hurt you after all.) I must confess though, that my fear has turned into something quite unhealthy.

I think it all started when we moved to Idaho and my coworkers started telling me about the Hobo spider. (WARNING: For those of you unfamiliar with the Hobo spider, you might want to stop reading now. If you continue reading, I cannot guarantee that your healthy fear of spiders (which I hope all of you have) does not turn into a very unhealthy fear (like mine).) They started telling me stories about this aggressive spider that chases after you. It also happens to be poisonous, and I was also told many stories about hospital visits after a Hobo bite. I will admit that I thought they were exaggerating when they said that the spider chases you. They were not exaggerating. I have been chased by a Hobo (spider, that is) a few times.

After I was informed about the lovely Hobo spider, I started having nightmares about them. Poor Tom. I used to wake him up at least once a night searching the bed for spiders (or so he tells me). It has gotten better now that we don't live in Idaho anymore. (Although Tom does try to tell me that Washington also has Hobo spiders. I ignore him though and pretend like he doesn't know what he is talking about.)

I do have a point to this post (sort of). In the last couple of days, Logan has been talking about spiders. At first I thought it was just a game, like the dinosaur game we play. He loves to use his imagination and pretends that he sees a dinosaur. Then he yells "RUN" and we run away. We do this over and over and over again. At first, this is sort of what the spider thing was like. Now it has gotten a little worse. If he feels something brush him (like a piece of lint or a string), he will say "spider" and act scared. He also acts scared sometimes if he sees a speck of something on the floor that he thinks is a spider. (Funny story real quick... Logan LOVES garlic bread. The other day Tom made some and it was "fancier" than the stuff I usually make because he put some herbs on it as well. Logan would not eat it at first. He kept pointing at it and saying, "Bug. Ewww!!!" He finally did eat it when we brushed off all of the herbs.)

I told Tom about all of this and he thinks I am ruining his son. Well, he didn't really say that, but he thinks I am giving Logan an unhealthy fear of spiders. I don't think I am though. Yes, I have nightmares about spiders, but I don't freak out if I see one. I blame it on his Little Einsteins Movie. It has scary spiders in it. I will admit though, that I am the reason Logan sees a bug and says, "Ewww." I will try and work on that.

The greater the fear the smarter the child. They're nasty! I hate spiders, but if you want to get rid of your spider fear, live in Hawaii and cockroaches will replace it.

tyler would laugh if he read this post. He has so many stories of me waking him up and making him search our bed for spiders. I also have a bunch of stories of me waking up and running wildly because I am being chased by bees. So just tell Tom to be grateful it is only spiders...well so far.
